Flipkart Ads basics: what to run in the first 60 days
Flipkart Ads can put a new D2C brand in front of buyers within a day. It can also burn through a wallet on listings that were never ready to convert. This is the order we would do things in for a brand starting from zero.

The quick answerCopy
In the first 60 days, fix your listings before you advertise, then run sponsored product ads on a few hero products to learn which searches convert. Know your break-even return before you spend, move winning searches into tighter campaigns, cut what wastes money, and only then add brand and display formats or scale for sale events.
Ads amplify listings; they don’t fix them. Images, title, price, ratings and delivery speed come first.
Start with sponsored product ads on three to five hero products, not your whole catalogue.
Work out break-even return on ad spend per product before setting bids or budgets.
Use the first month to learn which searches convert, then tighten targeting and cut waste.
Sale events like Big Billion Days raise competition and costs; prepare listings and stock weeks ahead.
01
What are Flipkart Ads and how do they work?
Flipkart Ads is Flipkart’s self-serve advertising platform for sellers and brands. The core format is sponsored product listings that appear in search results and on product pages, charged mainly when a shopper clicks.
Sellers access Flipkart Ads through Seller Hub or the Flipkart Ads platform and fund campaigns from an ad wallet. Product listing ads are where nearly every brand starts, because they appear exactly where shoppers search and compare. Brand-registered sellers can also use formats that promote the brand or a set of products, plus display and video placements.
Format names, targeting options and minimum budgets change, so check what your account offers in the Flipkart Ads dashboard rather than relying on screenshots from older guides. Ad spend is paid to Flipkart, separately from commissions and fees.
02
What should you fix before running Flipkart Ads?
The listing itself: images, title, key attributes, price, ratings and delivery promise. Ads send traffic to the listing; if it does not convert organically, ads will mostly buy expensive clicks.
Compare your listing side by side with the three best-selling similar products. Are your images as clear, with lifestyle and detail shots? Does the title include the brand, product type, key specification, size or quantity? Are the attributes filled in completely, so you appear when shoppers use filters?
Ratings matter a great deal on marketplaces. A brand-new product with no reviews will convert less than an established one, so expect a higher cost per sale in the first weeks and plan how to earn genuine early reviews through good packaging, inserts that ask for feedback within Flipkart’s rules, and fast delivery.
Delivery speed and badges such as Flipkart Assured, where your fulfilment model qualifies, affect both conversion and visibility. Check your eligibility before you spend.
Clear images, including size and detail shots
Keyword-relevant title within Flipkart’s format rules
All attributes filled for filters
Competitive price after offers
Stock to support the extra demand
03
How do you calculate break-even return on Flipkart Ads?
Divide the selling price by the profit you keep before advertising. If a ₹1,000 product leaves you ₹250 after product cost, commission, fees, shipping, GST and expected returns, you need at least ₹4 of sales per ₹1 of ad spend to break even.
Flipkart’s dashboard reports revenue generated per rupee of ad spend. That number is meaningless until you compare it with your own break-even figure, which differs for every product depending on margin.
Include returns honestly. Categories like fashion and footwear can have high return rates, and a return wipes out the ad cost of that sale as well as the margin. A product that looks profitable before returns can lose money on every advertised order.
Some brands deliberately run below break-even in the first weeks to build sales history and reviews. That can be sensible, but decide it in advance, set a limit and a date to review, and don’t let it become the default.

Sponsored product ads on three to five hero products, with broad or automatic targeting and a modest daily budget. The goal is learning which searches and placements convert, not maximum sales.
Pick hero products with the best margin, ratings and stock. Group them by category and price so one bestseller does not take the whole budget from the others.
Let automatic or broad targeting run for two to three weeks so Flipkart can test placements and search terms. Check the reports weekly, but avoid daily changes; small samples mislead.
Note which search terms bring orders, which bring clicks but no orders, and which have nothing to do with your product. Those three lists drive everything in the next month.
05
What should you change in days 31 to 60?
Move proven search terms into tighter campaigns with their own bids, stop spending on terms and placements that don’t convert, and add brand or display formats only if product ads are profitable.
Where your account allows keyword targeting, create a campaign for your best-converting searches and bid more confidently on them. Keep a separate campaign for your own brand name so it is not mixed with generic searches.
Pause or lower bids on products and terms that spend without orders after a fair test. Re-check the listing first; sometimes a price change or out-of-stock size is the real cause.
If you plan to advertise in a major sale such as Big Billion Days, start preparing at least a month before: stock, listing quality, sale pricing and a separate budget, because competition and click costs usually rise during sale periods.
06
Which metrics matter for Flipkart Ads?
Return on ad spend against break-even per product, total ad spend as a share of total sales, conversion rate and organic rank for your hero products. Total sales matter more than advertised sales alone.
Advertising on a marketplace often lifts organic sales too, because sales history and reviews feed Flipkart’s ranking. Track total sales per product before and during ads, not just the orders the ad report claims.
Review net profit monthly at product level, including returns and fees. A product that sells well on ads but makes no profit after costs is a candidate for a price change, a bundle or a pause.
07
How do you set up your first Flipkart Ads campaign?
1Choose three to five hero productsPick products with strong margin, good ratings, competitive price and enough stock for a month of extra demand.
2Calculate break-even per productWork out the profit left after product cost, commission, fees, shipping, GST and returns, then divide price by it.
3Fix the listingsImprove images, title and attributes so each listing is at least as good as the top sellers in its category.
4Launch product listing adsCreate a campaign with automatic or broad targeting, a modest daily budget and the hero products grouped sensibly.
5Review weekly, change slowlyAfter two to three weeks, sort search terms into converting, wasting and irrelevant. Act on patterns, not single days.
6Tighten and scaleMove winning searches into focused campaigns, cut waste, separate brand searches and raise budgets only where returns beat break-even.
08
What are the common mistakes?
01Advertising the whole catalogue at once
Budget spreads too thin to learn anything. Start with a few hero products and expand once they are profitable.
02Ignoring returns in the maths
High-return categories can turn a profitable-looking ROI into a loss. Include expected returns in break-even calculations.
03Running ads on weak listings
Poor images, missing attributes or few ratings mean you pay for clicks that don’t convert. Fix the listing first.
04Starting sale-event ads too late
Click costs rise and stock runs short during big sales. Plan budgets, pricing and inventory weeks in advance.
09
Questions people ask
How much should a new D2C brand spend on Flipkart Ads?
Start with a daily budget you can sustain for at least four weeks on a few hero products, enough to get meaningful clicks per product. Increase it only when returns beat break-even. Minimum budgets change, so check the current figures in your dashboard.
Is Flipkart Ads better than Amazon Ads for Indian brands?
Neither is better in general. It depends on where your category sells and where your buyers shop. Many brands run both; the principles of listing readiness, break-even maths and keyword harvesting are the same on each.
Do Flipkart Ads improve organic ranking?
Indirectly. Ads can generate sales and reviews, and sales history and ratings influence how products rank on the marketplace. The effect is not guaranteed, so judge ads on profit, not on a hoped-for ranking lift.
Can I run Flipkart Ads without being a registered brand?
Sellers can usually run product listing ads on their own listings. Brand-focused formats generally need brand approval on Flipkart. Check eligibility for each format in your Seller Hub or Flipkart Ads account.
How long before Flipkart Ads become profitable?
Many brands see the first useful data within two to three weeks and clearer profitability by the end of the second month, once wasteful terms are cut. New products with no reviews often take longer.
