GA4 key events: the setup that shows which channel paid

Most GA4 properties we open count page views well and outcomes badly. A form view is marked as a lead, WhatsApp clicks are not tracked, and every campaign link is untagged. Here is the setup that lets you see which channel actually brought business.

GA4 key events: setup check

  • Lead form fires only on successful submit
  • WhatsApp and call clicks tracked as events
  • Five or fewer events marked as key events
  • UTMs on email, WhatsApp and social links
  • Data retention set to 14 months

The quick answerCopy

Key events are the GA4 events you mark as business outcomes, such as a form submission, a WhatsApp click, a call or a purchase. Track a short list of real outcomes, tag every campaign link with UTMs, and read results in the Traffic acquisition report by session source to see which channel paid.

  • In 2024 GA4 renamed “conversions” to key events; “conversions” now means key events used in Google Ads.
  • Mark only real business outcomes as key events: leads, calls, WhatsApp clicks, bookings and purchases.
  • Fire lead events on successful submission, not on viewing the form or thank-you page alone.
  • Untagged links from email, WhatsApp and social end up as direct or referral traffic. Tag them with UTMs.
  • GA4 shows the online side; connect CRM outcomes to see which channels bring customers, not just leads.
01

What are key events in GA4?

Key events are events you mark in GA4 as important to your business. Google renamed them from “conversions” in 2024; the word “conversions” now refers to key events you use for bidding and reporting in Google Ads.

Everything in GA4 is an event: a page view, a scroll, a click, a form submission, a purchase. Marking an event as a key event tells GA4 to count it as an outcome and show it in acquisition and attribution reports, so you can see which channels and campaigns produced it.

The rename caused confusion because older guides still say “conversions”. In current GA4, you mark key events under Admin, in the Events or Key events settings. If you also want Google Ads to optimise towards one, you import or link it there, where it becomes a conversion.

02

Which events should you mark as key events?

Only actions that represent real business value: a completed enquiry form, a booking, a purchase, a click to call or WhatsApp, and a sign-up if it leads to revenue. Keep the list short.

A useful test: would your sales team or accountant care if this number doubled? Purchases, qualified leads and booked appointments pass. Scrolls, video plays and visits to the contact page do not; track them as normal events if you find them useful, but don’t mark them as key events.

GA4 limits how many key events a property can have, and a long list makes reports harder to read. Most small and mid-sized businesses need between two and five. Give each one a clear, consistent name so anyone reading a report knows what it means.

  • generate_lead: successful enquiry form submission
  • purchase: completed order with value
  • click_whatsapp: tap on a WhatsApp link or button
  • click_call: tap on a phone number
  • book_appointment: completed booking
03

How do you track form submissions correctly in GA4?

Fire the event only when the form is successfully submitted, using a success message, a thank-you page reached only after submission, or a dataLayer event from your developer. Enhanced measurement’s form tracking is often unreliable for this.

GA4’s enhanced measurement can record form interactions automatically, but in our audits it frequently counts form starts or submissions that failed validation. That inflates leads and makes the worst channels look good.

The most reliable method is a dataLayer push from the website when the form is accepted, picked up by Google Tag Manager and sent to GA4 as generate_lead. If that is not possible, use a thank-you page that cannot be reached directly, and exclude it from search engines.

Pass useful parameters with the event, such as form name or service type, and a value if you know roughly what a lead is worth. Never send personal data like names, emails or phone numbers to GA4; it breaks Google’s policies.

How do you track WhatsApp and phone enquiries in GA4?

Track clicks on wa.me links, WhatsApp buttons and tel: links as events, and mark them as key events. GA4 records the intent to contact; the conversation itself has to be tracked in your WhatsApp or call system.

For many Indian businesses WhatsApp is the main enquiry channel, and without this tracking GA4 shows far fewer leads than the business actually receives. In Google Tag Manager, a click trigger on links containing wa.me, api.whatsapp.com or tel: covers most setups.

A click is not a lead. Some people tap and never send a message. Compare click counts with the conversations your team actually receives, and use a pre-filled message such as “Hi, I found you on Google” to help staff note the source.

05

Why do UTM tags matter for GA4 attribution?

Without UTM tags, traffic from email, WhatsApp broadcasts, social posts, QR codes and many partner links is recorded as direct or referral, so the channels that worked get no credit.

Google Ads links are tagged automatically when auto-tagging is on, and Google Search Console can link with GA4. Almost everything else needs manual UTM parameters: utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign at minimum.

Agree a naming convention and write it down. “whatsapp / broadcast / diwali-sale” and “WhatsApp / Broadcast / Diwali Sale” appear as different rows in reports. Use lowercase, keep source and medium consistent, and keep a shared sheet of approved values.

06

Which GA4 reports show which channel paid?

Use the Traffic acquisition report, filtered to your key events, to see which session sources and channels produced outcomes. The Advertising section shows how credit is shared across the paths that led there.

Traffic acquisition is session-based: it credits the source of the session in which the key event happened, according to your reporting attribution settings. User acquisition shows the channel that first brought each user. Comparing the two shows which channels introduce people and which ones close.

GA4’s default reporting attribution is data-driven, with paid and organic last click available as an alternative. Whichever you choose, stay consistent month to month, and note that GA4 cannot see offline sales. For that, import CRM outcomes or send them back using the Measurement Protocol.

07

How do you set up GA4 key events step by step?

  1. 1List your real outcomesWrite down the two to five actions that represent business value: lead, call, WhatsApp, booking, purchase.
  2. 2Create reliable eventsIn Google Tag Manager, fire each event only on success: a dataLayer event, a thank-you page or a confirmed click.
  3. 3Mark them as key eventsIn GA4 Admin, open the events list and mark each outcome event as a key event once it has started recording.
  4. 4Set retention and filtersSet data retention to the longest available option, and filter out internal traffic from your office and team.
  5. 5Tag every campaign linkAdd UTMs to email, WhatsApp, social, QR code and partner links using a shared naming convention.
  6. 6Check with DebugViewTest each event in GA4 DebugView and Tag Assistant, and confirm counts against your actual enquiries for a week.
  7. 7Link Google Ads and Search ConsoleLink both products so ad clicks and organic search data appear with your key events.
08

What are the common mistakes?

01Counting thank-you page views as leads

Refreshes, bookmarks and direct visits inflate the count. Fire on confirmed submission, or protect the thank-you page.

02Marking every event as a key event

Scrolls and page views as key events drown out real outcomes. Keep the list to genuine business actions.

03Sending personal data to GA4

Names, emails or phone numbers in event parameters or URLs break Google’s policies. Strip them before they reach GA4.

04Untagged WhatsApp and email links

These visits show up as direct, so your best channels look worthless. Tag every link you control with UTMs.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between key events and conversions in GA4?

Key events are outcomes you mark in GA4 for analysis. Conversions are the actions Google Ads counts for bidding and reporting, which can be imported from GA4 key events or tracked with the Google Ads tag.

Should I use GA4 key events or the Google Ads conversion tag for bidding?

Either can work. The Google Ads tag is often more complete for Ads bidding, while GA4 imports keep definitions consistent across channels. Avoid counting the same action twice from both sources.

Why don’t GA4 numbers match my CRM or Google Ads?

Each system counts differently: consent choices, ad blockers, attribution models, time zones and click versus session timing all cause gaps. Expect differences, and use each tool for what it measures best.

Do I need consent mode for GA4?

If you have visitors from the UK or European Economic Area, Google requires consent mode for its advertising features, and privacy laws require valid consent. India’s data protection law also sets consent duties. Check current Google requirements with your legal adviser.

How long does GA4 keep data?

Standard GA4 properties default to two months of retention for detailed explorations. Change it to the longest available setting in Admin; standard aggregated reports are not affected by this setting.
