Plumbing · See it as a customer does

Water through the ceiling at 11pm. Your phone went to voicemail.

Your work is tidy and your regulars swear by you. But when a pipe bursts, nobody rings around for the best plumber. They ring the first one on the map who picks up. This playbook shows where those calls go, and how to be the one who answers.

The short versionMost plumbing businesses lose emergency jobs because they don't show in the map pack for every suburb they cover, leave the call-out fee unexplained, and miss calls while on a job. A burst pipe goes to whoever answers first, so map coverage, clear pricing and call handling fix it, not a bigger ad budget.

Why a good plumber still loses the job

Nobody compares plumbers at midnight. They ring whoever answers.

Someone with water coming through the light fitting doesn't read your about page. They search on their phone, look at the three map results, glance at the stars and the distance, and ring the top one. If it goes to voicemail, they ring the next. Planned work is slower — a bathroom or a hot-water replacement gets two or three quotes — but it is still decided by who turned up in the search and who came back with a price first.

Why doesn't our plumbing business show on Google Maps in nearby suburbs?

The map pack ranks you strongly near your registered address and weakly further out. With a vague service area, one generic category and no recent job photos, a van that set its profile up properly takes every emergency call in the suburbs you actually drive to.

Should a plumber publish a call-out fee online?

The first thing an emergency caller wants to know is what it costs to get someone through the door. “Call for a price” sounds like a blank cheque at 11pm. A page explaining the call-out fee, how time and parts are charged and when after-hours rates apply is what people trust, and what AI assistants quote.

Why do plumbing enquiries end up with a competitor?

Plumbers are on the tools when most calls come in, and an emergency caller doesn't leave a message. They ring the next number. Planned-work enquiries by form or WhatsApp wait for the evening admin session. Missed-call text-back, one inbox and a same-day quote rule stop both from going cold.

What we'd do about it

Five moves, in the order that pays.

Fix the leaks first, then grow. Scaling a funnel that loses enquiries just spends more to lose more.

Social presence · where customers find a plumber

A burst pipe isn't a scroll. It's a call to whoever's visible.

For plumbing, social is less about posts and more about being findable and reachable: the map, local groups, WhatsApp. Six things decide whether the call comes to you.

Should a plumber publish prices online?

You don't need a full price list, but you should explain the call-out fee, how labour and parts are charged and when after-hours rates apply. Callers who can see the structure are more willing to book than those told “it depends”.

We pay for leads from an app. Do we still need our own website?

App leads are often sent to several plumbers, so you're racing on price and speed. Your own map profile and pages bring callers who chose you. Keep the app if it pays, but don't let it be the only source of work.

How do we show up in suburbs further from our yard?

Set a service area that matches where you really work, build a page for each suburb with real jobs done there, and earn reviews from customers in those areas. Rankings further from your address usually take a few months to move.

We can't answer the phone on a job. What actually works?

Missed-call text-back covers most of it: the caller gets a text within seconds saying you've seen the call and when you'll ring back. For busy periods, an overflow answering service or a shared on-call roster takes the rest.

Are after-hours ads worth it for a plumber?

Sometimes. They work best when the map profile is already strong and every call gets answered. Without call tracking by hour and campaign, you can't tell whether they bought new jobs or paid for ones you'd have had anyway.

How long before a plumbing business notices a difference?

Call-handling fixes can show within weeks because they recover calls you already get. Map rankings in new suburbs and new job pages usually take a few months, depending on competition. We don't guarantee rankings or jobs.

Does a plumber need to post on social media?

Not much. Emergencies go to whoever shows on the map and answers, so the priorities are your Google Business Profile, a phone or WhatsApp that gets answered, and being recommended in local Facebook groups. Occasional job posts help, but being reachable matters far more than content.

Do we get a free website for our business?

Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your business — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
