AI Search & AEO

AEO vs GEO: which one first?

AEO gets you quoted by search engines. GEO gets you named by AI assistants. Same foundations, different finish line — here's how to tell which one your business needs now.

The quick answerCopy

AEO gets you quoted inside search-engine answers such as AI Overviews and snippets; GEO gets your brand named inside assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Most businesses need AEO first because it reuses SEO work you already have.

  • AEO is about being the quoted answer in Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results.
  • GEO is about being named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Mode for a recommendation.
  • They share one foundation: crawlable pages, consistent facts about your business, and content shaped as answers.
  • Start with AEO if your buyers still begin on Google. Add GEO when they start asking an assistant for a shortlist.
  • Measure them separately — snippet and Overview ownership for AEO, share of prompts naming you for GEO.

What is AEO?

Collapse

Answer engine optimisation is the work of shaping your pages so a search engine can lift a passage straight into its answer — a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, an AI Overview or a voice reply.

The engine is still a search engine. It crawls your page, decides which passage answers the query best, and quotes it — usually with a link back. Your job is to make that passage easy to find and easy to lift.

In practice that means question-led headings, a direct answer in the first forty words under each one, short supporting detail, and structured data that matches what the page actually says.

  • Question-led headings that match how people search
  • A direct answer under each heading, then the detail
  • FAQ, HowTo and Article schema that mirrors the visible page
  • Clean HTML: no answers hidden in tabs, images or PDFs

Generative engine optimisation is the work that makes AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode — name your brand when someone asks them who to choose.

If your buyers still start on Google, start with AEO. Add GEO when they start asking an assistant for a shortlist. Answer three questions:

2Do you rank on page one for your buyers' main questions?

3Do buyers ask for a shortlist before they contact anyone?

Your answer

AEO first — then add GEO.

Your buyers start on Google and you already rank, so reshape the pages you have into quotable answers. Because buyers ask for shortlists, start GEO groundwork in parallel: consistent facts and mentions on the sources AI reads.

Questions people ask

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

No. They share foundations, but SEO earns a ranked link while GEO earns a mention inside an assistant's answer — which depends heavily on what other sites say about you.

Does AEO still matter if AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Yes. Being the quoted source keeps your brand in front of the searcher and still earns the clicks that do happen. Track impressions and ownership, not just clicks.

Can a small business do GEO?

Yes — often more easily, because a small business has fewer facts to keep consistent. Start with your Google profile, key directories and one honest comparison page.

Which AI engines matter most?

The ones your buyers use. For most businesses that means Google's AI features first, then ChatGPT, then Gemini, Perplexity and Claude.

Does llms.txt help?

It's a proposed convention that tells AI crawlers which pages represent your site best. It's cheap to add, but no major model guarantees it reads one.
