It is rarely about who has the better website. Assistants name the brands that other sources agree on, that are described the same way everywhere, and whose pages they can actually read.

Asked an AI assistant
Which physiotherapy clinic in Pune is best for running injuries?
AssistantThree clinics come up repeatedly in reviews, local directories and sports-club pages. The one described the same way across most of those sources is the safest recommendation.

The quick answerCopy
Assistants cite sources that are corroborated across several independent pages, consistent about entity details, and structured so a specific claim can be extracted. Brands that lose citations usually fail the corroboration test, not the content-quality test.
ChatGPT names brands that several independent sources agree on — your own website is only one voice.
Inconsistent names, addresses or service lists make a model unsure you are one business, so it names someone it is sure about.
Vague copy gives an assistant nothing to quote. One plain sentence saying who you serve and where is worth more than a slogan.
Check that robots.txt and your CDN are not blocking OpenAI’s search crawler before you do anything else.
Fix access and consistency in days; start building third-party mentions now, because that part takes months.
01
How does ChatGPT decide which brands to name?
When it searches the web, ChatGPT retrieves a handful of pages for the question and names the brands those pages agree on. Without search, it relies on what it learned in training — which also reflects how often and how consistently a brand was described.
There are two routes into an answer. The first is training data: everything the model read before its cut-off. Brands that were written about often, by many sites, in consistent terms, are more likely to be “known”. The second is live retrieval: ChatGPT search rewrites the question into several web searches, fetches a set of pages, pulls out the passages that answer the question, and writes a summary with citations.
Both routes reward the same thing. A model is not judging which business is best; it is judging which answer is best supported by what it can read. A competitor mentioned on eight review sites, directories and “best in the city” lists will usually beat a better business that is only described on its own website.
That is uncomfortable, but useful. It means the gap is usually not your service or even your content quality. It is the evidence trail around your brand — and that can be built deliberately.
02
What is the corroboration test, and why do most brands fail it?
Corroboration means independent sources saying the same thing about you. An assistant is far more willing to name a brand when unrelated pages — reviews, directories, articles, comparison lists — agree on what it does and who it serves.
Your website is a self-interested source. Assistants read it, but they look for agreement elsewhere before repeating a claim like “the leading tax consultant in Indore” or “specialists in ACL rehab”. When three or four independent pages say something similar, the claim becomes safe to repeat.
In our experience on audits, the brand that gets named is rarely the strongest business in the market. It is the most corroborated one: the clinic listed on every directory with the same description, the agency quoted in two trade articles, the software tool that appears in every comparison post. Brands that lose usually have a strong site and almost nothing else.
The work here is closer to PR than SEO: getting listed, reviewed, quoted and compared in the places your buyers — and the models — already read.
Industry and local directories with a full, consistent profile
Review platforms your buyers actually use, with recent reviews
“Best [service] in [city]” and comparison articles by third parties
Trade press, association member lists and event speaker pages
Podcast show notes, interviews and partner pages
Community threads where your name comes up unprompted
03
Why do inconsistent business details cost you citations?
If your name, category, location and services differ between your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories, a model cannot be sure they describe the same business. Faced with doubt, it names someone it is sure about.
Small inconsistencies add up. “[Name] Dental Care” on the website, “[Name] Dental Clinic” on Google, an old address on a directory from before the move, and a service list that mentions implants in one place and not another. To a person these are obviously the same practice. To a system stitching facts together from different pages, they are three slightly different entities.
Write one canonical description: legal and trading name, one-line description of what you do, primary category, address or service area, phone, founding year and main services. Use it word for word on your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and every directory. Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links pointing to those profiles so the connection is explicit.

A claim is extractable when one sentence, read on its own, says who you are, what you do and for whom. Assistants lift passages, so a hero line like “Solutions that empower growth” gives them nothing to quote.
Compare “We help businesses unlock their potential” with “We are a physiotherapy clinic in Baner, Pune, specialising in rehab for runners and ACL injuries.” The second sentence answers a real question on its own. It can be lifted into an answer without any surrounding context and still be accurate.
Pages that tend to get cited are the ones built around a specific question: service pages that say exactly what is included, pricing or cost explainers, honest comparison pages, and FAQs written in your buyers’ words. Put the direct answer first under each heading, then the detail. If an assistant has to read six paragraphs to work out what you do, it will quote someone who said it in one.
05
Could your website be blocking ChatGPT without you knowing?
Yes. If robots.txt or a firewall blocks OpenAI’s search crawler, ChatGPT search cannot fetch your pages and will cite whoever it can read. Check robots.txt and your CDN or security plugin settings first.
OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs: OAI-SearchBot for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot for collecting training data, and ChatGPT-User for pages a user asks it to visit. You can block training while still allowing search — but many sites block all three by accident with a blanket rule, or because a security service now blocks AI crawlers by default.
Rendering matters too. If your key content only appears after JavaScript runs, or sits inside tabs, images or PDFs, a crawler may fetch the page and still find nothing to quote. A quick test: view the page source, or fetch it with a plain request, and check that the answer text is there in the HTML.
06
What should you fix first if ChatGPT ignores your brand?
Fix access, then consistency, then corroboration. Access and consistency take days; corroboration takes months, so start it in parallel rather than leaving it until last.
Week one: confirm crawlers can reach and read your important pages, and rewrite the first lines of your homepage and main service pages so they state plainly what you do, for whom and where. Week two: publish your canonical business description and update every profile and directory to match it.
From then on, corroboration is a steady programme rather than a project. Each month, aim for a few new independent mentions in places that matter to your buyers: a directory listing completed properly, a guest article, a client case study on a partner’s site, a comparison list you have earned a place on. Track the same set of buying prompts monthly so you can see whether the pattern shifts.
07
What separates the brand that gets named from the one that doesn’t?
Usually not quality — the named brand has more agreement around it and fewer obstacles in the way.

08
What are the common mistakes?
01Rewriting the website and stopping there
Your site is one source. Without independent mentions, better copy alone rarely changes what an assistant says about your category.
02Blocking every AI crawler by default
Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search results. Decide crawler by crawler instead of using one blanket rule.
03Testing with one prompt, once
Answers vary between runs and users. Track a fixed set of prompts over time before concluding anything.
04Chasing low-quality listings
Dozens of spammy directory links add noise, not trust. A few relevant, well-kept profiles do more.

Questions people ask
Can I pay to be recommended in ChatGPT’s answers?
No. There is no way to buy a place in an assistant’s organic answer. Where assistants show advertising, it is labelled and kept separate from the answer itself, so the only route into the answer is being the brand the sources support.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to start naming my brand?
Fixes to crawler access and on-page wording can show up in search-enabled answers within weeks, once pages are re-crawled. Corroboration takes longer — typically months of steady mentions — and changes to what a model learned in training only arrive with newer model versions.
Does ranking well on Google help with ChatGPT?
It helps indirectly. Search-enabled assistants retrieve pages from web indexes, so pages that rank and answer questions clearly are more likely to be fetched. But a top ranking will not compensate for weak corroboration or inconsistent business details.
Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?
That is a business decision. Blocking GPTBot limits use of your content for training; it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. If visibility in AI answers matters to you, at minimum keep the search crawler allowed.
Why does ChatGPT describe my business incorrectly?
Usually because an outdated or inconsistent source says so — an old directory listing, a former address, a past service you no longer offer. Find where the wrong fact appears, correct it at the source, and make sure your own pages state the right version plainly.
