Google Ads budget in India: how much to start with

There is no magic number, but there is a method. Work backwards from the leads you need, what clicks cost in your category and how well your site converts — then fund enough months to learn.

AI Overview

There is no fixed minimum. Work backwards from the leads you need, your cost per click and your conversion rate, and fund two to three months of testing before judging results.

The quick answerCopy

Start from the leads you need, not a round number. Estimate cost per click with Google’s Keyword Planner, assume a cautious conversion rate for your site, and budget enough clicks to produce a meaningful number of leads each month. Run it for two to three months before judging.

  • Clicks needed = leads wanted ÷ conversion rate. Budget = clicks needed × cost per click.
  • Keyword Planner gives a bid range for your keywords and city; plan with the top of the range.
  • A small budget spread across too many keywords teaches you nothing. Concentrate it on one or two services.
  • Plan for two to three months of learning; the first month is mostly about finding and removing waste.
  • Ad spend goes straight to Google, with GST on Indian invoices; any management fee is a separate line.
01

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads in India?

Google sets no meaningful minimum — a daily budget of a few hundred rupees will run. The real minimum is the budget that buys enough clicks to produce leads you can learn from.

A daily budget of ₹300 will run. But if clicks in your category cost ₹40, that is seven or eight clicks a day, and if one visitor in twenty-five enquires, you get roughly one enquiry every three days. After a month you still will not know which keywords work.

So the useful question is not ‘What is the minimum?’ but ‘What budget gives me enough data to make decisions within two or three months?’ That depends on three numbers you can estimate before spending a rupee.

02

How do you calculate a starting Google Ads budget?

Decide how many leads you want per month, divide by your expected conversion rate to get the clicks you need, then multiply by your estimated cost per click. That is your monthly ad budget.

Leads wanted is a business decision: how many enquiries can your team handle, and how many make the spend worthwhile? Conversion rate is how many visitors enquire. With no history, pick a deliberately cautious planning number — say one enquiry per forty visitors — and replace it with your real figure after the first month.

Cost per click comes from Google Keyword Planner. Enter your main keywords and target location — Indore, Pune, all of Maharashtra — and it shows a low and high range for top-of-page bids. Use the higher end for planning; competitive service terms often cost more in practice than the estimate suggests.

Budget for the month, not the day. Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, while keeping the monthly charge within the daily budget multiplied by 30.4. Set the daily figure from the monthly total you can afford.

03

What does a worked example look like?

A Bhopal physiotherapy clinic wanting 30 enquiries a month, assuming one enquiry per 40 clicks at ₹25 a click, needs about 1,200 clicks — roughly ₹30,000 a month in ad spend.

The arithmetic: 30 leads × 40 clicks per lead = 1,200 clicks. 1,200 clicks × ₹25 = ₹30,000 a month, or about ₹1,000 a day. These figures are illustrative; your own Keyword Planner estimates and conversion data replace them.

If ₹30,000 is too much, change the goal, not the maths. Aim for 15 leads and ₹15,000, narrow to the two or three services with the best margins, or tighten the radius around the clinic. Halving the budget while keeping the same keyword list just halves the data and spreads it thinner.

Then compare the result with what a customer is worth. If a patient typically books a course of sessions worth several thousand rupees and one in three enquiries books, the cost per patient quickly tells you whether the channel can pay for itself.

Where should a small Google Ads budget go first?

On high-intent Search keywords for your best-margin service, in the area you actually serve. Leave Display, Performance Max and awareness campaigns until Search is profitable and properly tracked.

High intent means the searcher wants to buy or book now: ‘physiotherapist near me’, ‘knee pain physio Bhopal’, ‘GST registration consultant Indore’. Informational searches such as ‘what is physiotherapy’ are cheaper but rarely convert on a small budget.

Use phrase and exact match for core keywords, add negative keywords from day one — jobs, salary, free, course, training, DIY — and check the search terms report weekly. For service businesses in India, job and course searches are a frequent source of wasted clicks.

Location settings matter more than people expect. Target people in or regularly in your area, not people merely interested in it, and use a radius around your premises if you serve locally.

05

How long should you test before judging Google Ads?

Give a new account two to three months. The first month mostly finds and removes waste, the second shows which keywords and ads produce leads, and by the third you can decide whether to scale, fix or stop.

Early results swing. Automated bidding has a learning period, search term data takes time to build up, and a handful of leads can make a week look brilliant or terrible. Judging after ten days usually means judging noise.

Set checkpoints instead. After four weeks: is tracking working, are search terms relevant, are leads arriving at all? After eight: which campaigns produce qualified leads, and at what cost? After twelve: does the cost per customer work against what a customer is worth?

06

What should you budget for beyond ad spend?

GST on Google Ads invoices, a landing page that converts, call and form tracking, and management time or fees. Ad spend is only one line in the real cost of winning a customer.

Google Ads invoices in India carry GST. Registered businesses can usually claim input tax credit if they add their GSTIN in billing settings — check the current rate and rules with your accountant, as they can change.

The landing page often matters more than the budget. Sending paid clicks to a slow homepage with no clear next step wastes money at any spend level. A focused page with the service, price guidance, proof, a short form, a call button and a WhatsApp option is a better first investment than extra budget.

If you hire help, keep management fees separate from ad spend, so you always know exactly what you paid Google. Ad spend should be paid straight to the platform from an account you own and can access.

07

How do budget levels change what you can learn?

A smaller budget is fine if the scope shrinks to match — fewer keywords, one service, one area.

What it can doWhat to keep it to
A few hundred ₹ a dayTest whether one service gets any leads at allOne service, exact and phrase match, tight radius
Around ₹1,000 a dayFind which keywords and ads produce enquiriesTwo or three services, one city
Several thousand ₹ a dayGive Smart Bidding enough conversions to learn fromSeveral services or cities, with call tracking
Scaling upTest Performance Max, YouTube or DisplayOnly once Search is profitable and tracked
08

What are the common mistakes?

01Spreading a small budget across everything

Twenty services and five cities on ₹500 a day means no keyword gets enough clicks to learn from. Pick one or two and expand later.

02No negative keywords

Job, course, free and DIY searches eat small budgets quickly. Add negatives on day one and review search terms weekly.

03No conversion tracking

Without tracked forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks, you cannot tell which keywords work, and Smart Bidding has nothing to learn from.

04Judging after two weeks

Early data is noisy. Set checkpoints at four, eight and twelve weeks and decide against them.

09

Questions people ask

Can I start Google Ads with ₹10,000 a month?

Yes, if you keep the scope narrow: one service, one area, a handful of high-intent keywords and a strong landing page. You will learn more slowly, so allow longer before deciding whether the channel works.

Is Google Ads or Meta Ads cheaper for a small business?

Meta clicks are often cheaper, but Google Search reaches people actively looking for what you sell. For services people search for, start with Google Search; for products people discover visually, Meta can work better. Many businesses end up using both.

Should I start with Smart campaigns or Performance Max?

They are simpler to set up but give less control and less insight into search terms and placements. Most small advertisers learn more from a standard Search campaign first, then test automation once tracking is reliable.

Do I pay Google in advance?

Indian accounts can usually choose automatic payments, charged after costs build up, or manual payments made in advance. The options depend on your account and country, so check billing settings when you create the account.

What is a good cost per lead in India?

It depends on the category and what a customer is worth. A high cost per lead can be excellent for a high-value service and terrible for a low-value product. Work out customer value and how many leads become customers, then set your ceiling from that.
