Google AI Mode: what changes for businesses that rely on search

Google now offers a full conversational search mode alongside its classic results. For businesses that depend on search, it changes which clicks arrive and why, but far less about how you earn visibility than the headlines suggest.

AI Overview

For a small Indian business, look for GST invoicing, e-way bills and bank reconciliation. Compare providers on pricing pages and verified reviews, and check support hours in your language before you commit.

The quick answerCopy

AI Mode is Google's conversational search: it splits a question into many sub-searches and writes one answer with links to sources. It uses the same index and eligibility rules as normal Search, so strong SEO still decides who appears. Expect fewer simple clicks and more considered ones.

  • AI Mode answers complex questions in a conversation, using a technique Google calls query fan-out.
  • There is no separate AI Mode index or special markup. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Pages that answer the sub-questions buyers ask, clearly and specifically, are the ones that get linked.
  • Local and shopping answers draw on your Business Profile and product data, so keep both complete.
  • Search Console counts AI Mode inside your normal web search totals; it is not broken out separately.
01

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google, powered by Gemini. Instead of a list of links, it writes an answer to the full question, cites the pages it drew on, and lets the user ask follow-ups in the same thread.

Google launched AI Mode in the US in 2025 and has since expanded it to many countries and languages, including India and the UK. It sits as its own tab or entry point next to the familiar results, and Google has been adding features to it steadily, so what users see varies by market and changes often.

Under the hood, Google describes a technique called query fan-out. A question such as “Which CRM suits a 20-person sales team selling to hospitals in India?” is broken into sub-questions about features, pricing, compliance and reviews, each searched separately, before the results are combined into one answer.

02

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are a summary placed above normal results for some searches. AI Mode replaces the results page with a full conversation. Overviews suit quick questions; AI Mode is built for longer, more complex ones with follow-ups.

With an AI Overview, the familiar results are still directly below, so clicks still flow to them. In AI Mode, the answer is the page. Your visibility depends on being one of the sources it links to, or on the user asking a follow-up that brings you in.

Both features draw on Google's same search index and ranking systems. Google's own guidance is that there is nothing extra you need to do to appear in either, beyond the normal requirements: be indexed, and be eligible to be shown with a snippet.

03

What does AI Mode change about your search traffic?

Simple informational questions are increasingly answered without a click, so top-of-funnel traffic can fall. The clicks that do arrive tend to come from people further along, checking a source, a price or a provider before they act.

If much of your traffic comes from basic definitions and how-to queries, expect pressure. If it comes from people comparing providers, checking prices, or looking for someone local, AI Mode often brings you the same buyers in a later, more decided state.

This is why judging search by clicks alone is now misleading. Watch impressions, enquiries and branded search alongside clicks. A page that is cited in answers may build demand that shows up later as a direct visit or a search for your name.

How do you get your business linked in AI Mode answers?

Do the fundamentals well, then cover the sub-questions. Pages that answer one specific question clearly, with facts such as prices, timelines, coverage and requirements, give query fan-out something to find and cite.

Think about the follow-ups a buyer asks after the first question: How much does it cost? How long does it take? Do you serve my city? What's included? Who is it not for? Each deserves a clear heading and a direct answer on your site, not a line buried in a brochure PDF.

Consistency matters too. AI systems cross-check facts, so your name, address, services and prices should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. In our experience on audits, contradictions between these sources are among the most common reasons a business is described vaguely or not at all.

  • Indexable pages with a clear answer under each question heading
  • Pricing or cost-range pages, even if you quote individually
  • Comparison and “who it's for” pages written honestly
  • Matching business facts on your site, profile and directories
  • Structured data that mirrors what is visible on the page
05

How does AI Mode handle local and shopping searches?

For local intent, AI Mode draws on Google's place data, including Business Profiles, reviews and maps. For products, it draws on Google's shopping data, fed by Merchant Center. Incomplete profiles and feeds are the easiest way to be left out.

A dental clinic in Indore or a joinery firm in Manchester should treat its Business Profile as a source document for AI answers: correct categories, services with descriptions, opening hours, photos, and a steady flow of genuine reviews with replies.

Retailers should keep Merchant Center feeds accurate on price, stock, delivery and returns. Google has also been testing agent-style features in AI Mode in some markets, such as finding availability or tracking prices, which rely on the same structured data. These features change often, so check what is live in your market.

06

How do you measure AI Mode in your reports?

Search Console includes AI Mode clicks and impressions in its normal web search totals, without a separate filter. Track impressions, clicks and average position together, and pair them with enquiry and branded search data.

Because AI Mode isn't broken out separately, look for patterns: impressions rising while clicks stay flat on informational pages, and stable or rising enquiries from commercial pages. Annotate your reports when Google announces changes in your market.

In GA4, make sure enquiries, calls and purchases are tracked as key events, so you can judge search by outcomes. Run a monthly manual check of your top buyer questions in AI Mode and note whether you are cited, as no tool yet does this perfectly.

07

Classic results vs AI Mode: what's different?

The ranking foundations are shared; the presentation, the clicks and the way you measure them are not.

08

What are the common mistakes?

01Writing separate “AI Mode content”

There is no separate index. Improve the pages you have so they answer buyer questions directly; that serves classic results and AI Mode together.

02Blocking snippets to protect content

nosnippet and similar controls also limit how you appear in AI features. Use them only for genuinely sensitive text.

03Judging search on clicks alone

AI answers reduce simple clicks. Report impressions, enquiries and branded search beside clicks, or you'll misread a healthy channel.

04Neglecting your Business Profile

For local queries the profile is a primary source. Missing services, hours or replies to reviews leave the answer to competitors.

09

Questions people ask

Can I stop Google using my pages in AI Mode?

Google's controls apply to search features as a whole. noindex removes a page from Search entirely, and nosnippet or max-snippet limit what can be shown, including in AI features. There's no setting that removes you from AI Mode alone while keeping full classic listings.

Does Google-Extended keep my site out of AI Mode?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for Gemini models outside Search. AI Mode and AI Overviews are part of Google Search and follow normal Search crawling and snippet controls.

Are there ads in AI Mode?

Google has begun showing ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews in some markets, drawn from certain campaign types. Eligibility and availability are changing quickly, so check Google Ads' current documentation for your country before planning budget around it.

Is AI Mode available in Hindi and other Indian languages?

Google has added several languages beyond English, including Hindi, but coverage and features vary by language and region. Test your key buyer questions in the languages your customers actually search in.

Does schema markup help with AI Mode?

Structured data helps Google understand your pages and is used across search features, but Google says no special schema is needed for AI Mode. Mark up what's visible and accurate; never mark up content users can't see.
