How to get your pages quoted in Google’s AI Overviews
There is no special tag, form or schema that puts you in an AI Overview. Google picks supporting links from pages that are already indexed and that answer the question best. Here is how to become one of them.

how long does GST registration take
AI Overview
GST registration usually takes about a week once documents are complete, but it can take longer if the officer asks for clarification or a physical check. Applying with Aadhaar authentication tends to be quicker.

To be quoted in an AI Overview, a page must be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and contain a clear, self-contained answer to the question being asked. Google says no special markup is required: rank well for the topic, put a direct answer under a question heading, and back it with specific detail.
Google says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible.
Pages that already rank on page one for a topic are the most likely candidates for a supporting link.
A direct one or two sentence answer under a question heading is the easiest passage for Google to lift.
nosnippet and max-snippet controls also limit how your content appears in AI features.
AI Overview impressions and clicks are counted in Search Console’s Web performance data, not reported separately.
01
How does Google choose which pages to show in AI Overviews?
Google generates the overview from its search index and links to pages that support what it says. Pages that are indexed, rank well for related searches and contain a clear answer are the ones it tends to cite.
Google’s documentation describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as drawing on its core ranking systems. It also describes a “query fan-out” technique, where the system runs several related searches on subtopics to build a fuller answer. That means your page can be cited for a question you never targeted, as long as it ranks for one of the sub-questions.
In practice the sources are usually pages already doing well in normal results for the topic, though not always the top result. A page ranked fifth with a crisp, quotable answer can be linked ahead of a first-ranked page that buries its answer under an introduction.
02
Are there technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews?
Only the usual ones. The page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. There is no AI Overview tag, special schema or opt-in form.
Check three things. First, the page is indexed: confirm in Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. Second, it is not blocked from snippets by a nosnippet rule or a very short max-snippet value. Third, the important text is in the HTML Google renders, not inside images, PDFs or content that only loads after a click.
Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from AI Overviews. That token controls use of your content for Gemini models, not Google Search. To limit how much of a page appears in AI features, use the same snippet controls you would use for normal results.

Answer text visible in the rendered HTML
Structured data, if used, matching the visible content
03
How should you write a page so AI Overviews quote it?
Use the question as a heading, answer it in one or two plain sentences straight underneath, then give detail. Each section should make sense on its own if it is lifted out of the page.
AI systems extract passages, not whole pages. A paragraph that starts “As mentioned above” or depends on a table three screens earlier is hard to quote. A paragraph that says “GST registration usually takes about a week once documents are complete” is easy.
Be specific. Name the conditions, ranges, exceptions and steps. Overviews favour answers that resolve the question fully, and vague copy written to sound authoritative gives the system nothing to cite.
Cover the follow-up questions too. If people searching “how to register for GST” then ask about fees, documents and timelines, answer each under its own heading. Fan-out searches for those sub-questions can then land on your page.

Informational and comparison questions, especially longer ones: how, why, what is, which is better, how much. Short brand or navigational searches rarely show an overview.
Look at the queries you already rank for in Search Console and filter for question words. Search a sample of them in Google, in an incognito window and from the country you care about, to see which ones show an overview and which pages it links to today.
AI Overviews appear in many countries and languages, including India in English and Hindi, and in the UK and US. Results differ by location and change frequently, so check the markets you sell in rather than assuming.
05
Does authority still matter for AI Overviews?
Yes. The same signals that help pages rank help them get cited: helpful, original content, clear authorship, consistent business details and links or mentions from respected sites.
For health, money and legal topics, Google holds sources to a higher standard. Named authors with real expertise, cited sources and accurate, dated information make a page a safer choice to quote.
Consistency matters as well. If your prices, opening hours or service list differ between your website, Google Business Profile and directories, the system has less reason to trust any single version.
06
How do you know if you appear in AI Overviews?
Search Console includes AI Overview impressions and clicks in the Web search type of the Performance report, but does not separate them. Track a fixed set of questions manually or with a rank tracker that records overviews.
Pick 20 to 50 questions that matter to your business and record, monthly, whether an overview appears, whether your page is linked and which competitors are. This simple log is often more useful than any dashboard.
Expect clicks per impression to fall on queries where an overview answers the question fully. Being the cited source still puts your brand in front of the searcher, so watch impressions, branded searches and enquiries alongside clicks.
07
How do you get a page quoted in an AI Overview?
1Pick questions you already rank forIn Search Console, find question-style queries where you rank in the top ten. These are your fastest wins.
2Check how the overview answers todaySearch each one, note what the overview says and which pages it links. Identify what it misses or gets vague.
3Rewrite the section answer-firstPut the question in a heading and a direct one or two sentence answer under it, then the detail, steps or exceptions.
4Add the follow-up questionsAnswer the next three or four questions searchers ask, each under its own heading, so fan-out searches can find you.
5Confirm the page is eligibleCheck indexing in URL Inspection, remove restrictive snippet rules and make sure the answer is in the rendered HTML.
6Track and repeat monthlyLog whether you are linked for each question. Refresh pages that rank but are not cited, starting with the highest-value queries.
08
What are the common mistakes?
01Opening with a long introduction
If the answer sits below three paragraphs of context, a passage-based system may never reach it. State the answer first, then explain.
02Blocking Google-Extended to “opt out”
It does not affect AI Overviews or rankings. If you want less of a page shown, use snippet controls, and accept they apply to normal results too.
03Answers locked in images or PDFs
Price lists, charts and brochures as images or PDFs are harder to quote. Put the key facts in plain HTML text on the page.
04Writing a new page for every question
Thin single-question pages rarely rank. One thorough page covering a topic and its follow-ups is a stronger candidate for citation.

Questions people ask
Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Supporting links in AI Overviews are organic. Google does show ads in and around AI Overviews in some markets, but those are bought through Google Ads and labelled as sponsored.
Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?
Not on its own. Google says structured data is not required. It helps Google understand your page, so use it where it fits, but the visible answer on the page is what gets quoted.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
You can limit it with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet, which also affect normal search snippets. There is no setting that keeps you in normal results while excluding you only from AI Overviews.
Why does an AI Overview cite a competitor with worse content?
Usually because their page states the answer more directly, ranks for a sub-question you do not cover, or is more consistent with other sources. Compare their passage with yours and tighten your answer.
Is getting into AI Overviews different from GEO?
Yes. AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so it is closer to answer engine optimisation (AEO) and builds on SEO. Getting named in ChatGPT or Perplexity depends more on how widely and consistently your brand is mentioned.
