Gyms & fitness · See it as a new member does

“Gym near me”, 2 January. Your offer page went up on the 5th.

Your coaches are good and your regulars train like it's a job. Yet every January the people who searched, compared and joined did it before your offer was ready — and the rest of the year, tour requests wait for someone to check the inbox. This playbook shows where would-be members go.

The short versionMost gyms lose would-be members because the map profile and membership pages are built too late for the January rush, the price question — joining fee, contract, what's included — goes unanswered, and tour or trial requests wait too long. Pages built months ahead and a fast reply fix it.

Why a good gym still loses the new member

People don't compare equipment. They compare price, hours and nerve.

Someone who has decided to start again doesn't compare racks and rowers. They search, look at three gyms on the map, check the monthly price and whether there's a contract, look at photos to see whether people like them train there, and book a tour or day pass at whichever gym made that easy. Most of it happens in a short window — and in January, that window opens before most gyms have their pages ready.

Why don't new members find our gym on Google Maps in January?

People searching in January — “gym near me”, “no-contract gym”, “women-only gym”, “gym with classes” — get map results and pages that were built and found weeks earlier. A profile with old photos and a site with one membership page loses to a gym that prepared in October.

Should a gym show membership prices online?

The first question is nearly always the monthly price, then the joining fee, the contract and how cancelling works. Keeping it for the tour reads as a sales pitch waiting to happen. A page that sets out every tier, what's included and the terms gets more tours — and is the answer assistants quote.

Why do gym tour requests go cold?

Day-pass and tour requests often come in late in the evening, when the decision to start is fresh. A reply three days later finds the person already training somewhere else, or put off entirely. One inbox, a named owner and tour slots people can book themselves close that gap.

Five moves, in the order that pays.

Social presence · where would-be members check you

They watch your class reels before they book a tour.

Social is where would-be members see the floor, the coaches and the atmosphere long before January. Six things decide whether a follow becomes a tour or a trial.

Show prices?Beat the chains?Prep January?
When should we start preparing for January?

Ideally in the autumn. Pages and profile changes usually take weeks to be found and trusted, so work done in October is ready when people start searching after the holidays. Work started in January mostly arrives in February.

Should a gym publish membership prices?

Yes. Monthly price, joining fee, contract length and how freezing and cancelling work are the first things people want to know. Hiding them for the tour mainly filters out people who would have joined.

We can't compete with budget chains on price. What do we do?

Don't try to. Be found for what they don't offer — classes, coaching, PT, a quieter floor, specialist equipment, a beginner-friendly feel — with a page for each, and make the price of that value clear.

Why do new members stop coming after a few weeks?

Often because nothing connects them to the gym after sign-up: no induction booked, no check-in, no class or coach introduced. A simple first-month sequence helps. It can't replace good coaching, but it stops people slipping away quietly.

How long before a gym notices a difference?

Profile, pricing and reply-time fixes can show within a few weeks because they plug leaks. Pages for peak-season searches need longer, usually a few months, which is why timing matters. We don't guarantee rankings or sign-ups.

Does this work for a boutique or functional-training studio?

Yes. The same leaks apply, with more weight on class and coach pages, the trial-class booking path and photos that show who actually trains there.

When should a gym ramp up social before the January rush?

From late autumn. People follow and watch for weeks before they join, so class reels, coach introductions and a clear membership explainer should be running well before New Year. In January the job is replying fast with a tour link, not starting from scratch.

Do we get a free website for our gym?

Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your gym — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
