Engineering consultancies · See it as a client does

“Structural engineer for data centres.” Nobody wrote that page.

Your engineers have solved hard problems on difficult sites, and the architects and contractors who use you keep coming back. But when someone new needs a fire engineer for a timber building or MEP for a laboratory, they ask for exactly that — and the consultancy that wrote about it gets the fee request.

The short versionEngineering consultancies miss appointments because clients search for a discipline in a sector, while most sites list disciplines and sectors separately and target neither pairing. Pages for each combination you've delivered, a clear explanation of what a fee covers, and a same-day reply to fee requests fix most of it.

Why a capable consultancy still misses the bid

Clients don't hire a discipline. They hire it for their building.

An architect assembling a team for a laboratory doesn't want any MEP engineer. She wants one who has done laboratories, understands the services density and can show it. She asks colleagues and an assistant, checks two or three websites for that exact combination, and sends a fee request with a deadline. Consultancies that list “structural, civil, MEP” on one page and “sectors” on another rarely make that list, however good their engineers are.

Why don't AI assistants recommend our engineering consultancy?

Clients search for a discipline in a sector — “structural engineer for data centres”, “fire engineer for timber buildings”, “geotechnical for coastal sites”. Almost nobody targets these combinations deliberately. A consultancy with one page per pairing it has delivered, with a real project behind it, is the one assistants name.

The fee scope nobody explains

Should an engineering consultancy explain its fees online?

Clients compare engineering fees line by line and often can't tell why two proposals differ. A page explaining how fees are built — scope of services, stages, deliverables, site attendance — and what usually sits outside, such as surveys and site investigation, makes your proposal easier to compare fairly. A bare lump sum invites a cheaper one.

The fee request priced too late

Why do engineering fee requests go cold?

Architects and contractors often need fees from several engineers to form a bid team, with a deadline days away. If the request waits until a director has time to price it properly, the team has formed without you. A same-day acknowledgement, the scope questions and a firm return date are usually enough to stay in.

Architects check your engineers before they send the fee request.

Architects, contractors and client teams check who would do the work and what they've done in that sector. Six things decide whether a project post turns into a fee request.

Publish fees?Too technical?Tenders?
Most of our work comes through architects and contractors. Does search matter?

Their choice of engineer is shaped by who they already know and who they can check. New architects, developers and estates teams search and ask assistants. A page for your discipline in their sector is how you reach the ones who don't know you yet.

Should an engineering consultancy publish its fees?

Not a rate card. But explaining how fees are built — scope of services, stages, deliverables, site attendance and exclusions — makes your proposals easier to compare and reduces the line-by-line haggling that follows a bare lump sum.

How specific should a discipline-and-sector page be?

As specific as your evidence. “Structural engineering for data centres” works if you've delivered data centres. Don't build pages for pairings you haven't done; they read as thin and they invite work you can't evidence.

Can project pages be technical without losing clients?

Yes, if they lead with the problem in the client's terms — programme, budget, site risk — and then explain the engineering. Engineers reading it get the detail; developers and estates managers get why it mattered.

Does this help with frameworks and public tenders?

It doesn't replace the bid itself, but published, current case studies and named engineer profiles make pre-qualification answers faster to assemble and easier for evaluators to check.

How long before we see more fee requests?

Acknowledgement and routing fixes can show within weeks. Pairing pages usually take a few months to be picked up by search and assistants, depending on how crowded the sector is. We don't guarantee rankings, AI mentions or appointments.

Does social media help an engineering consultancy win appointments?

It helps when engineers post, not just the company page. Architects, contractors and client teams check who would do the work and what they've done in that sector. Short posts on real projects — discipline, sector, stage, decision — make your people findable. Name clients only with their permission, and keep performance claims to what the project data supports.

Do we get a free website for our consultancy?

Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your consultancy — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
