They searched by breed and age. Your site only says “dog food”.
Your range is well chosen and the owners who find you reorder for years. Yet new owners searching for their own pet — the breed, the age, the sensitive stomach — land on a larger retailer or a marketplace. This playbook shows where that long tail goes, and how to keep the reorder once you've won it.
The short versionMost pet stores lose new customers because they organise by species and brand while owners search by breed, age, size and condition, leave cost per day and delivery on heavy bags unclear, and answer “will this suit my dog?” too slowly. Long-tail pages, clear product data, fast replies and reorder reminders fix this.

Why a good store still loses the owner
Owners don't shop for “dog food”. They shop for their dog.
A pet owner doesn't search a category. They search their animal: the breed, the age, the size, the itchy skin or the fussy appetite. They want a page that says this is for a pet like theirs, the cost per day, how to switch without an upset stomach, and an answer when they ask. Then they reorder every few weeks for years — from whoever made the first order easy. A store with one “dog food” page rarely gets that first order.

Why don't pet owners find our store when they search their breed?
Breed, age, size and condition combinations add up to an enormous long tail — “food for senior small dogs”, “kitten food for a sensitive stomach”, “toys for heavy chewers”. Marketplaces and larger pet retailers cover it with filters and product data, and AI shopping answers draw on the same. A store with species-level categories is on page three.

Should a pet store show feeding cost per day?
Owners compare bag prices, but what they're really weighing is the cost per day for their pet, delivery on a heavy bag and whether a subscription works out cheaper. A bag price with delivery added at checkout reads as a catch. Feeding cost per day, delivery terms and subscription savings beside the price convert better — and AI shopping answers quote them.

The “is it right for my pet?” question

Why do pet owners stop replying after asking about a food?
“My dog is ten and has a sensitive stomach — will this suit him?” is a first-order question, often sent at night. Answered the next afternoon, the owner has bought whatever a retailer recommended. It needs one queue, an owner, approved answers on life stage and ingredients, and a plain “ask your vet” for anything medical.

Questions pet stores ask
Straight answers, no sales script.
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, a 30-minute call is the fastest route — no pitch, no deck.
Not every breed — the combinations people actually search and you can serve: life stage, size, common needs, and the popular breeds in your market. We generate pages from real search demand with quality gates, so thin breed pages don't go live just to exist.
What can we say about foods for health conditions?
Describe the product, its ingredients and who it's formulated for, as the manufacturer states it, within the rules in your market. Veterinary diets need particular care. Anything that sounds like treating a condition points the owner to their vet.
Marketplaces are cheaper on big bags. How do we compete?
Usually not on price alone. Reliable delivery, a subscription that's easy to change, quick answers and pages that speak to the owner's actual pet win a loyal share. Reorders are where the margin is, so that's where we focus.
Should we push subscriptions?
Offer them clearly, with easy skip, pause and cancel. A subscription matched to bag size and feeding amount is genuinely useful. One that's hard to leave produces complaints, not loyalty.
How long before a pet store notices a difference?
Reply-time, delivery-clarity and reorder-reminder fixes can show within a few weeks. Breed and age pages usually take a few months to rank. We don't guarantee rankings or sales.
Do you work with stores that also have a physical shop?
Yes. The shop needs its own map listing and local pages, and online and in-store customers should get the same reorder reminders. We can split reporting by channel.
Which social platforms matter most for a pet supplies store?
Instagram and Facebook. Owners follow pets like their own on Instagram, and breed and local owner groups on Facebook are where they ask what to buy. WhatsApp is useful for suitability questions and opt-in reorder reminders. Keep health advice general and point anything medical to a vet.
Do we get a free website for our store?
Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your store — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
