They loved box one. Box three is where they cancelled.
Your boxes are well curated and the subscribers who stay a year love them. Yet sign-ups come in, and a large share leave before the third box — after an unanswered swap request, a repeat item or a charge nobody explained. This playbook shows where subscribers go in the first ninety days, and how they find you in the first place.
The short versionMost subscription boxes lose subscribers in the first ninety days: an unanswered swap or skip request, unclear terms, nothing to say what's coming next. They also miss the “best box” lists and AI answers where shortlists form. Designing the early boxes, clear terms and answers before dispatch fix more than a cheaper acquisition offer.

Why a good box still loses the subscriber
Subscribers don't judge box one. They judge months two and three.
A subscription is bought twice: once at sign-up, after reading a comparison list, checking past boxes and hunting for the cancel terms, and again every month after that. The first box usually goes well. The decision to stay happens around boxes two and three — when a swap request went unanswered, an item repeated, or a charge arrived before anyone said what was coming. Acquisition cost only pays back if those first ninety days are designed, not left to chance.

Why don't comparison sites and AI answers include our subscription box?
Subscription shoppers start with a shortlist: comparison sites, “best box for” articles, marketplaces and the AI shopping answers that summarise them. Those lists favour boxes with visible past contents, clear pricing and terms, and reviews from real subscribers. A box with a lifestyle photo and a sign-up button doesn't make the list.

Should a subscription box show cancellation terms on the pricing page?
Before subscribing, people want three things: what a typical box contains and is worth, what it costs with delivery, and exactly how to skip, pause or cancel. Terms tucked into an FAQ read as a trap and stop the sign-up. One clear line beside the price converts better, and it's what AI shopping answers repeat.

Why do subscribers cancel after their second or third box?
A new subscriber asks to swap out an allergen or skip next month on a Sunday evening. The reply arrives after the box has shipped with the wrong contents, and the cancellation follows. In the first ninety days, questions need one queue, an owner and an answer before the next dispatch cut-off.
What we'd do about it
Five moves, in the order that pays.
Fix the leaks first, then grow. Scaling a funnel that loses enquiries just spends more to lose more.

Questions box brands ask
Straight answers, no sales script.
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, a 30-minute call is the fastest route — no pitch, no deck.
For most subscription boxes, retention decides whether acquisition pays back at all. A cheaper sign-up who cancels after one box costs more than a pricier one who stays a year. That's why the plan starts with the first ninety days, not with ads.
Should we show past boxes if contents change every month?
Yes. Past boxes show what's typical: the kind of items, the variety and the value. Say plainly that contents change. People subscribe to what they can picture.
Will clear cancellation terms make more people cancel?
They make people more willing to sign up, and a visible skip or pause option often keeps subscribers who would otherwise cancel. Hard-to-find cancellation produces complaints and chargebacks rather than loyalty.
Are “first box free” offers worth it?
Sometimes. Judge each offer on how many subscribers are still active after three boxes, not on sign-ups. We test offers that way, so the ones that only rent customers for a month are stopped quickly.
How long before a subscription box notices a difference?
Reply and first-ninety-day changes show in the next few sign-up cohorts, so within two or three months. Getting onto comparison lists and ranking for gift and theme searches usually takes longer. We don't guarantee rankings, mentions or sign-ups.
Can you help with gift subscriptions?
Yes. Gift buyers search differently and peak around holidays. They need their own pages, a clear start date and message options, and a way to turn the recipient into a subscriber when the gift ends.
Which social platforms matter most for a subscription box?
Instagram and YouTube for unboxings, because people subscribe to what they can picture. A Facebook group helps keep subscribers past the early boxes, and WhatsApp suits opt-in skip and dispatch reminders. Show skip and cancel terms plainly in your bio and on the subscribe page; hidden terms tend to show up later as cancellations.
Do we get a free website for our box brand?
Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your box brand — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
