Hotels & resorts · See it as a guest does

They searched your hotel's name. An OTA ad answered first.

Guests like the property, the reviews are good and occupancy looks fine on paper. Yet more of it arrives through OTAs, each booking with a commission attached — often after the guest searched your own name. This playbook shows where the direct booking slips away and what to fix first.

The short versionMost hotels and resorts lose direct bookings in three places: their own name in search, where OTA ads and metasearch sit above the official site; a direct offer that is hidden or no clearer than the OTA's; and pre-stay questions answered too slowly. Owning the name, showing the direct offer plainly and replying fast fixes most of it.

Why a good hotel still loses the direct booking

Guests don't choose a channel. They choose the clearest page.

Guests rarely set out to book through an OTA. They see a property in an assistant's suggestion or on a list, search its name, and land on whichever page shows the room, the price and the cancellation terms most clearly. If that page belongs to an OTA, the commission follows. Most direct bookings are lost to clarity and speed on the hotel's own name, not to a better price somewhere else.

Why do guests book our hotel through OTAs instead of direct?

Many guests who book on an OTA searched your hotel's name first. OTA ads and metasearch price grids often sit above the official site on that search, and the guest clicks the first page that shows rooms and prices. A brand campaign, a complete hotel listing and an official site that answers faster keep that click — and the commission — with you.

Is it worth showing guests why to book a hotel direct?

A guest comparing your site with the OTA wants three things in a few seconds: the rate, what it includes and the cancellation terms. A “Check availability” button that opens a slow engine with less detail sends them back to the OTA. A visible direct offer — a perk, flexible terms, the room detail — within your contracts is the reason to book with you.

Why do direct hotel enquiries end up booked on an OTA?

Families, couples and event guests ask before they book: a cot, a connecting room, parking, an early check-in. A reply the next afternoon that says “please check our website” usually finds the guest already booked on an OTA. One inbox, a named owner per shift and saved answers with a direct link turn those questions into direct stays.

Bid on our name?Leave the OTAs?Beat OTA price?
Should we bid on our own hotel name if we already rank first?

Often, yes. If OTAs or metasearch sites bid on your name, their ads appear above your organic result. A brand campaign is usually inexpensive because the searcher already wants you, and it keeps the first click on your official site. We check who is bidding before recommending it.

Can we show a lower price than the OTAs?

That depends on your contracts. Some OTA agreements restrict rate differences, and the rules vary by market. Where the price can't differ, the offer can: flexible cancellation, breakfast, an upgrade, a late checkout. We work within what your contracts allow.

Should we leave the OTAs altogether?

Usually not. They bring guests you wouldn't otherwise reach, especially first-time visitors to your destination. The aim is to stop paying commission on guests who were already looking for you — name searches, repeat guests and direct enquiries.

How do AI assistants decide which hotels to suggest?

They draw on what's published about you across the web: your site, map profile, OTA listings and reviews. Specific, consistent detail about rooms, facilities and location makes you easier to recommend accurately. We measure whether you're named; we don't guarantee mentions.

How long before direct bookings change?

Brand search and reply-time fixes can show within weeks, because those guests were already looking for you. Content and data clean-up across the web usually takes a few months to settle. We don't guarantee rankings or bookings.

Does this work for a resort with a spa and restaurants, or a small group?

Yes. Each property needs its own listing, pages and reporting by source. Spa, restaurants and event spaces inside a resort often deserve their own pages and profiles, because guests search for them separately.

Which social platforms matter most for a hotel or resort?

Instagram and your Google Business Profile first, with Facebook for families and returning guests. Guests discover the property on Instagram, check photos and reviews on the map, and watch longer tours on YouTube. Every profile should link to your own booking page, with a direct extra that respects your OTA contracts.

Do we get a free website for our hotel?

Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your hotel — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
