They searched your port pair. Your schedule lives in a PDF.
Your vessels call where the big carriers don't, your rotation is reliable and your agents know every port. Yet shippers and forwarders asking who serves that port pair find someone else, because your routes, schedules and equipment sit in PDFs and a portal that search can't read. This playbook shows how to fix that.
The short versionMost regional and specialist shipping lines miss direct bookings because routes, port rotations, transit times and equipment live in PDFs and portals that search and assistants can't read, free time and charges are buried in a tariff, and space requests wait past cut-off. Structured route, port and equipment pages fix this.

Why a reliable line still misses the booking
Shippers don't search for a line. They search for a route.
A shipper or forwarder needs to move a box between two ports, on a date, in a type of equipment. They search the port pair, or ask an assistant who serves it weekly, and look for a rotation, a transit time, cut-offs, free time and an equipment answer. The global carriers publish all of that as structured pages. A regional line with the same route and better service, but a PDF schedule, is simply not in the answer.

Why don't shippers find our shipping line when they search a route?
Route, schedule and equipment questions are structured by nature: this port to that port, weekly, reefer. They suit structured pages, one per service, port pair and equipment type, generated from your own sailing data. PDFs and portal-only schedules give search and assistants nothing to read.

Should a shipping line publish free time and charges by route?
Before booking, shippers want to know the free time, what demurrage and detention will cost if a box is late back, and which surcharges apply on that route. If the answer is a long tariff PDF, they ask a competitor or book through a forwarder who can tell them. Plain charge pages per route fix it.

The space request after cut-off

Please submit via the booking portal and we'll confirm.Next day · 2:30 pm
Cut-off has passed. We've booked on another line.2:45 pm
Why do our booking requests go to another line?
Space and equipment requests are time-bound: a sailing has a cut-off, and a shipper with cargo ready books whoever confirms first. A request that waits overnight in a general inbox, or is bounced to a portal, often misses the sailing and the customer.

Questions shipping lines ask
Straight answers, no sales script.
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, a 30-minute call is the fastest route — no pitch, no deck.
Our schedules change constantly. How can pages stay accurate?
By generating them from the same sailing data your operations team already maintains, rather than writing them by hand. When a rotation or cut-off changes in your system, the page changes too. That is more accurate than any PDF.
Should a shipping line publish demurrage and detention charges?
Yes, in plain terms by route or port, alongside free time. Shippers want to know before booking what late return will cost. Clear pages reduce disputes as well as pre-booking calls.
Most of our bookings come through forwarders. Does direct marketing upset them?
It doesn't have to. Clear route and equipment pages help forwarders sell your services too, and many shippers will still book through a forwarder. The aim is to be found on your routes, whoever ends up making the booking.
Will assistants recommend a smaller line over a global carrier?
For a specific route, port or equipment type, assistants often name whoever states it most clearly. We structure your pages so they can be cited and track which questions name you; we can't guarantee that they will.
How long before a shipping line notices a difference?
Space-request routing can show within weeks. Structured route and schedule pages usually take a few months to be indexed and cited, depending on how competitive the route is. We don't guarantee rankings or bookings.
Do you work with ro-ro, breakbulk or short-sea operators?
Yes. The structure is the same: a page per service, port and cargo type, charges stated plainly and fast answers on space. Breakbulk and project operators need more on cargo types and handling than on container equipment.
Which social platforms matter most for a shipping line?
LinkedIn, because forwarders and shipping managers follow carriers there and check rotations, ports and agents before a booking. WhatsApp is how space requests reach your port agents fast. YouTube shows vessels, port calls and equipment. X earns its place for schedule changes and disruption notices, as long as someone posts them promptly.
Do we get a free website for our line?
Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your line — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
