They searched the OE number. A marketplace had your part.
Your parts are well made and your distributors trust the quality. But a workshop or parts buyer searches the OE number, or make, model and year, and lands on a marketplace or cross-reference site that lists your part better than you do. This playbook shows where those searches go, and how to structure fitment so they reach you.
The short versionAuto parts manufacturers lose buyers because fitment data such as make, model, year, engine, OE and cross-reference numbers sits in spreadsheets or catalogues instead of indexable pages; trade terms are unclear; and fitment questions wait days. Structured fitment pages, clear trade terms and fast answers fix this, and open a very long tail.

Why a good part still loses the sale
Buyers don't search your brand. They search the vehicle.
A workshop with a car on the ramp, or a parts buyer restocking, doesn't browse brands. They type the make, model, year and part, or the OE number off the old part, and pick a listing that confirms fitment. Marketplaces and cross-reference sites win this because they structured the data. Your fitment database may be better, but if it isn't on indexable pages, the order goes to whoever showed it.

Why don't buyers find our parts when they search by vehicle?
Fitment is the search: make, model, year, engine, OE and cross-reference numbers. Assistants answer the same questions from whatever structured data they can find. If your fitment lives in a spreadsheet or catalogue file, marketplaces and cross-reference sites get named instead, and every vehicle-part combination you make is long-tail traffic you never see.

Should an auto parts manufacturer show trade pricing online?
Trade buyers expect different pricing from retail, but they need to know how to get it: who qualifies, how pricing tiers work, minimum orders, delivery and returns. A site with retail-only signals, or no pricing route at all, sends workshops back to the distributor or marketplace they already use.

Why do our trade and fitment enquiries go cold?
A fitment question usually comes from someone with a vehicle waiting, and they'll buy whatever is confirmed first. A trade application that waits a week tells a workshop how ordering will feel. Fitment answers from approved data, routed enquiries and a same-day call for new accounts stop most of these going elsewhere.
What we'd do about it
Five moves, in the order that pays.
Fix the leaks first, then grow. Scaling a funnel that loses enquiries just spends more to lose more.

Questions auto parts makers ask
Straight answers, no sales script.
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, a 30-minute call is the fastest route — no pitch, no deck.
We have thousands of part-vehicle combinations. Isn't that too many pages?
Not if the pages are built from clean data and each one says something specific. We start with your best-selling ranges, check fitment accuracy and indexing, then extend. Thin or duplicate pages get merged rather than published.
Our distributors sell to garages. Should we sell direct?
That's a commercial decision, not a marketing one. Either way, your site should be the reference for fitment and quality, with a clear route to buy, whether that's a trade account with you or a distributor near them.
Should we include OE and competitor cross-reference numbers?
OE numbers, yes, because they're how buyers search. Cross-references to other brands can help too, as long as the equivalence is accurate. Every number on the page should come from your verified fitment data.
Marketplaces already list our parts. Why do we need our own pages?
Marketplace listings are often incomplete or inconsistent, and you don't control them. Your own pages set the authoritative fitment, which marketplaces, distributors and assistants can then rely on.
How long before we notice a difference?
Enquiry routing and trade-account fixes can show within weeks. Fitment pages usually take a few months to be indexed and rank, and the long tail builds as more ranges are published. We don't guarantee rankings or orders.
Our fitment data has gaps and errors. Is that a blocker?
It's the first thing to fix, because wrong fitment creates returns. We work from your existing data, flag gaps and conflicts, and publish the ranges your team has verified first.
Which social platforms matter most for an auto parts maker?
YouTube, because mechanics watch fitting guides before they trust a part. LinkedIn for distributors, fleet and trade buyers who check your range and your people. WhatsApp handles “will it fit?” with the right part page. Facebook trade groups matter too, where workshops ask each other which brand to fit.
Do we get a free website for our company?
Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your company — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
