They searched the application. You published a product code.
Your formulations are good and your technical team knows them inside out. But an engineer with a corrosion, adhesion or chemical-resistance problem searches the application, not your product code, and an assistant names a supplier that explained which coating suits which substrate. This playbook shows where those enquiries go.
The short versionChemical and coatings manufacturers lose buyers because their sites list product codes while buyers search by application, substrate and compliance; data sheets are hard to find; pack sizes, coverage and MOQ go unexplained; and technical enquiries wait days. Application pages, findable data sheets and routed enquiries fix this.

Why a good formulation still loses the order
Buyers don't search product codes. They search the problem.
A maintenance engineer with rusting steelwork, or a formulator needing a resin that survives a cleaning cycle, starts with the problem: substrate, temperature, chemical exposure, compliance. They search it, ask an assistant, open data sheets and check approvals, then send a technical question to two or three suppliers. A site organised by product code, with data sheets buried and a chemist who replies on Thursday, loses to whoever explained the application.

Why don't engineers find our coatings when they search applications?
Technical buyers search by application and condition, such as coating for galvanised steel, chemical-resistant floor or food-safe lubricant, and ask assistants the same questions. Product pages named by code, with the detail only in a PDF data sheet, give neither anything to match. A competitor with an application guide gets named instead.

Should coatings manufacturers show pricing and coverage online?
Buyers compare price per kilo or litre, but what matters is cost per job: coverage, film thickness, number of coats, pack sizes and waste. If your site says “contact sales for pricing”, buyers compare the wrong number, or the cheapest listing. Explaining pack sizes, coverage ranges, MOQ and samples lets them compare properly.

Why do our technical enquiries go cold?
A technical enquiry usually comes from a buyer close to specifying: will this bond, survive this temperature, meet this approval? If it waits days for the one chemist who knows, the buyer asks someone else. Routing by application, a named owner and approved answers for common questions fix most of it.
What we'd do about it
Five moves, in the order that pays.
Fix the leaks first, then grow. Scaling a funnel that loses enquiries just spends more to lose more.

Questions coatings companies ask
Straight answers, no sales script.
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, a 30-minute call is the fastest route — no pitch, no deck.
Should we organise our website by application or by product?
Both, but buyers start with applications. Keep product pages for people who know the code, and add application pages for the problems they search: substrate, environment, chemical exposure. Each application page links to the products that suit it.
Can we make performance claims on application pages?
Only ones your technical data supports. We state limits, conditions and test methods as your data sheets do, and avoid absolute claims. Your chemists approve every page, and compliance statements stay within the rules that apply in your markets.
Should our safety data sheets be public?
Making current SDS and TDS easy to find usually helps buyers, distributors and your own sales team, and many companies publish them openly on product pages. Where you'd rather control access, a short request form still beats a phone call.
Distributors sell most of our volume. Why compete with them online?
You're not competing; you're being the reference. Distributors carry price and stock, your pages carry the application knowledge. When your pages are better, buyers specify your product by name and then buy wherever suits them.
How long before we notice a difference?
Routing technical enquiries and fixing data sheets can show within weeks. Application pages usually take a few months to rank and appear in assistant answers, and trials then follow your normal specification cycle. We don't guarantee rankings or orders.
Our formulations are confidential. What can we publish?
Applications, performance limits, surface prep and compliance status, never formulations. We write from your data sheets and your technical team, and nothing confidential goes on a page.
Which social platforms matter most for a coatings manufacturer?
LinkedIn, where engineers, specifiers and buyers check your applications and your technical people. YouTube, because a coating applied on a named substrate is more convincing than a product code. WhatsApp helps for quick technical questions. Keep every performance claim matched to the current data sheet and safety data.
Do we get a free website for our company?
Yes. Every monthly plan includes a free 5-page website for your company — fast, AI-readable and yours to keep. It goes live within 48 hours once your plan is active and the launch checklist is done. Your domain, hosting and any paid tools sit outside the offer and stay in your name; online shops and booking systems are quoted separately. What's included
